Candid&#8217;s 2026 Nonprofit Compensation Report finds women CEOs are closing the pay gap at small and midsize nonprofits, while the largest organizations are moving in the wrong direction 
New York, NY—August 13, 2026. Today, Candid released its <a href="https://candid.org/nonprofit-compensation-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2026 Nonprofit Compensation Report</a>, the most comprehensive study of executive compensation in the U.S. nonprofit sector. Now in its 26th edition, the report analyzes compensation data for over 200,000 positions at nearly 120,000 tax-exempt organizations using 2024 IRS Form 990 and 990-EZ filings. This year&#8217;s data tells two very different stories about gender pay equity—one of real progress, and one of a troubling reversal at the top. 
“Candid exists to bring transparency and data to the social sector so it can do better. This report is a prime example of why that work matters,” said Dr. John Brothers, interim president and CEO of Candid. “In the coming months, we will be expanding this research, so it continues to spark the honest conversations the sector needs to make real, sustained change.” 
Key findings from the 2026 Nonprofit Compensation Report include:

This was the only budget tier where the gap grew. </li>

This is the same as in 2021 and 2023, and up only four cents from 2014. </li>

“The fact that the largest nonprofits have both the fewest women CEOs and the widest pay gaps raises important questions about which organizations are being resourced to grow into the sector&#8217;s enduring institutions—and which are expected to deliver transformative outcomes without the same long-term investment,” said Elizabeth Barajas-Román, president and CEO of Women&#8217;s Funding Network. 
Candid&#8217;s own demographic research points to a possible driver: board composition. Smaller nonprofits tend to have smaller, more gender-diverse boards. As organizations grow, so do their boards. But the share of women declines sharply. Women represent the majority of board members only at organizations with expenses below $1 million. Above that threshold, men hold the majority and the gap widens with size. 
This matters because boards set CEO pay. Young-joo Lee, Ph.D., the Eileen Lamb O&#8217;Gara Chair in Women&#8217;s Philanthropy at Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, found that “[b]oard gender diversity not only increases the likelihood of women being appointed as CEOs, but it also drives fairer, more equitable executive pay. If we want to build a truly fair workplace, we have to start at the top by actively fighting hiring biases and prioritizing board diversification.” 
The pay gap at large organizations is not just a compensation issue. Women lead just 31% of nonprofits with budgets over $50 million—up from 20% in 2014, but still less than a third. Meanwhile, they lead 58% to 62% of organizations with budgets under $500,000. The largest institutions, with the most visibility and the deepest resources, remain the least likely to have women at the helm, and when they do those women earn less. 
“For generations, the nonprofit sector has asked women to lead the work of justice while refusing to pay them justly for doing it,” said Natanja Craig Oquendo, CEO of Boston Women&#8217;s Fund. “We invented a rule that said spending less on people proved we cared more about the mission—and then we called it accountability. It was never accountability. It was a myth.” 
The stakes extend far beyond these individual leaders. The nonprofit workforce is nearly 70% women. When the sector&#8217;s most prominent organizations fail to pay women equitably, it signals to the next generation of leaders whom leadership is for and what their work is worth.

The nonprofit sector is closing the gender pay gap—except in the organizations with the most revenue

New York, NY—June 3, 2026. Candid is proud to announce the appointment of three distinguished sector leaders to its Board of Trustees: A. Nicole (Nic) Campbell, co-CEO and president of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA); Usama M. Fayyad, chairman and founder of Open Insights, an AI and data technology consulting firm; and Patrick Walsh, co-founder of Classy, acquired by GoFundMe.
“Nic, Usama, and Patrick bring a diversity of expertise that will help guide Candid into our next chapter as we seek to expand the data we provide and ways in which people access it,” said Ann Mei Chang, Candid’s president and CEO. “Nic’s work in social justice grantmaking, Pat’s , experience growing a fundraising platform, and Usama’s expertise in AI and data technology will be invaluable in helping us develop user-friendly ways to bring funders and nonprofits together through data.”
Before joining RPA in March 2025, Campbell founded and led the Build Up Companies, a federated group of companies focused on strengthening the capacity of systems change funders to transform life outcomes for historically marginalized communities. Previously, she served as senior director of operations and foundation counsel for Dalio Philanthropies, deputy general counsel and secretary for the Open Society Foundations, and associate general counsel for the New York Community Trust.
“I am honored to join Candid&#8217;s Board of Trustees. Candid plays such an important role in advancing transparency, knowledge, and trust across the social sector,” Campbell said. “At a time when strong institutions and reliable information matter deeply, Candid’s mission is more critical than ever. Prior to founding Open Insights in 2008, Fayyad served as Yahoo!’s first chief data officer, founding and leading Yahoo Research Labs after the company acquired his startup in 2004. He has also served as global chief data officer at Barclays Bank and founding executive chairman at Oasis500, an early-stage technology accelerator. Currently he also serves as senior vice provost for AI and data strategy and the inaugural director of the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University, where he is a professor at Khoury College of Computer Sciences.
“I am excited to be joining a not-for-profit institution that wants to leverage AI and data to deliver transparency and insights in this critical area for helping charitable organizations and funders do what’s right and useful to the communities they serve,” said Fayyad. “My passion for data and AI can hopefully help others to do good with tech.”
Walsh co-founded Classy in 2006 and grew it into a fundraising platform that helped more than 10,000 nonprofits raise over $5 billion before it was acquired by GoFundMe in 2022. He has focused on building infrastructure that helps mission-driven organizations throughout his career, leading initiatives focused on programmatic performance, outcomes measurement, and sector-wide collaboration. He also serves as a board director and advisor for Tap Cancer Out and as a Leadership Council member at Oxfam America.

New York, NY—May 27, 2026. Candid today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed John Brothers as Interim President and CEO, effective June 1, 2026. Brothers, who has served on Candid&#8217;s Board of Directors since 2024 and is a nationally recognized leader in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, will guide the organization during a period of transition while Candid conducts a national search for its next permanent President and CEO. 
Brothers succeeds Ann Mei Chang, who announced her plans to retire in March, and has led Candid with vision and purpose, advancing the organization&#8217;s mission to increase transparency, strengthen civil society, and support the social sector with trusted data, research, and tools. Chang will continue to support the organization during the leadership transition to help ensure continuity and stability.
