

Usama M. Fayyad is Chairman of Open Insights, founded in 2008 for AI & data technology consulting after leaving Yahoo!. He also serves as SVP for AI & Data Strategy and Inaugural Director of the Institute for Experiential AI at Northeastern University, where he is a professor at Khoury College of Computer Sciences.
Usama became the first person to hold the title of Chief Data Officer when Yahoo! acquired his startup. As Yahoo!’s CDO & EVP of Strategic Data Solutions, he built the data group and founded and led Yahoo Research Labs into one of the top research institutions focused on the sciences underlying the Internet.
He served as Global Chief Data Officer at Barclays Bank; Founding Executive Chairman at Oasis500, an early-stage technology accelerator in the Middle East; co-founder & CTO of OODA Health; and held leadership roles at Microsoft. He founded the Machine Learning Systems group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, earning the top Excellence in Research award from Caltech and a NASA medal from the U.S. Government.
Usama holds a Ph.D. in AI/Machine Learning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, along with two B.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering, an MSE in Computer Engineering, and an M.Sc. in Mathematics. He has published over 100 technical articles, holds more than 20 patents, and is a Fellow of both AAAI and ACM. He has edited two influential books on data science and co-founded two key journals in the field.
