Sumiko Martinez is passionate about advocating for underrepresented populations and engaging communities to effect meaningful changes. After earning a BA in English from Westminster College and a Master’s degree and PhD in Communication from the University of Utah, her resolute belief in the value of humanity and the innate power in each of us has led her to pursue a service-oriented career. She worked in higher education for fifteen years and partnered with K-12 educators across Utah, served as Chair of the Board of Utah Humanities, and most recently joined the Madison House Autism Foundation as the Director of the Autism After 21 Utah Project. Sumiko has been a speaker and invited lecturer at conferences, fundraisers, and events, including acting as emcee for TEDxSaltLakeCity, and she was awarded the Utah Women in Higher Education Network’s Special Recognition Award for her work on emergency student financial aid in 2020. She lives in Utah with her husband Sean, their hilarious twin daughters, and their motorcycles, Ginger and Lenore.
