Executive Director, Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity

Margaret Hempel served as the first Executive Director for the Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity (CGRE) and the independent, values-aligned Gender Equity Action Fund from 2019-2025. In this role, she created a first-of-its-kind community of donors and moved over $300 million to advance gender, reproductive and racial equity across the United States.  
 
Prior to her most recent role, she served nine years as the Director of Gender, Racial and Ethnic Justice at the Ford Foundation where she oversaw grantmaking in Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam and the U.S, as well as support for regional and global initiatives concentrated in advancing sexual and reproductive rights; overcoming socio-economic vulnerabilities, particularly of young women; expanding access to quality sexuality education; and support for sexuality research. She served as Vice President for Programs at the American Jewish World Service, an international development organization dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease, where she managed $13million a year in grant making in Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as service and advocacy programs that included facilitating volunteer experiences for 600 people per year. Margaret also spent seven years as the vice president for programs at the Ms. Foundation for Women and was responsible for grant making, training and advocacy focused on strengthening policies and programs that benefit low-income women and their families in the U.S. Earlier in her career, she helped design the Ford Foundation’s Reproductive Health program and worked at the Quaker United Nations Office and for Women of China Magazine based in Beijing, China. 
 
Margaret holds a M.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and is a Columbia Business School/Teachers College certified leadership coach. She has served on the boards of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project, the Women’s Dignity project, the Opportunity Agenda, the Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE) and she was a founding board member of the Funders Network on Reproductive Health, Rights and Population. She currently serves on the boards of the Girls First Fund and VOW for Girls.
