Community Foundation Assets Reached $91 Billion in 2017
CF Insights launches a newly updated Columbus Survey Results Dashboard
New York, NY — June 21, 2018. CF Insights, a service of Foundation Center, announces the launch of the 2017 Columbus Survey Results Dashboard – the most up-to-date, comprehensive dataset reflecting the current financial state of community foundations in the United States. The latest findings, based on research that has been conducted annually since 1988, are available through an updated, interactive dashboard at columbussurvey.cfinsights.org.
The data reflect the contributions of nearly 270 community foundations that participated in an “annual census of the field.” In 2017, community foundation assets reached a total of over $91 billion, a 19 percent increase from 2016. Among other factors, market conditions were able to foster such growth, accelerating a trend started in 2016. Gifts received by community foundations and grants given totals increased across the field as well.
The Columbus Survey Results Dashboard also features four top 100 ranking lists by asset size, distribution rate, total (gift & grant) transactions, and gifts per capita. These lists allow community foundations of all sizes to see how they are positioned within the field and determine how their foundation’s overall strategy aligns with their rankings.
Newly added functionality allows foundations to enhance their visibility in their communities by easily sharing their rankings with stakeholders and the public via different social media channels. In response to feedback from users of previous Columbus Survey results, dashboard enhancements allow users to easily access the data underlying the visualizations. Larry McGill, Foundation Center's vice president for knowledge services, said, “The visual and interactive features of the dashboard allow users to quickly develop an accurate overview of the community foundation field. The dashboard also fuels important conversations in the field that often lead to additional research on key issues in community philanthropy.”
As more foundations contribute data to the annual survey and their IRS Forms 990 become publicly available, CF Insights will continue to build out the data and analysis. The foundations that contributed to this research (and that collectively manage more than 90 percent of U.S.-based community foundation assets) can go to cfinsights.org to access a wider range of comparative and longitudinal reports. CF Insights members additionally can access online benchmarking reports comparing their 2017 performance to peers of their choosing.
On June 28, we will be hosting a free webinar discussing the results of the survey. To attend, please register here.
We encourage those community foundations who have not yet contributed data to share their 2017 results and use the resources available at cfinsights.org to create custom reports to put your own foundation's performance in context.
