New Norms in Technology and the Social Economy Are Transforming Civil Society

GrantCraft, a service of Foundation Center, has released Philanthropy and the Social Economy: Blueprint 2016, the annual industry forecast authored by scholar Lucy Bernholz. In its seventh installment, this year's report explores how changes in the structure of work, especially the emergence of the "gig economy" made possible by new technologies, will precede an associated shift in the role and approach of civil society organizations.

Groundbreaking Research Reveals Changes in Funding for Africa

A partnership between Foundation Center and the Africa Grantmakers Affinity Group (AGAG) has produced the first-ever overview of foundation funding specifically for continental Africa. According to new research released today by the two organizations, foundation grants targeting Africa increased more than 400 percent, from $288.8 million in 2002 to nearly $1.5 billion in 2012. The number of grants also increased from 1,380 to 1,965.

New Tools for Exploring Disaster Funding From Foundations and Other Sources

Foundation Center, the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide, and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), the only full-time resource devoted to disaster philanthropy, have jointly launched a new online dashboard and interactive funding map, along with the second edition of their annual research report, Measuring the State of Disaster Philanthropy 2015: Data to Drive Decisions. The online tools combine information from six global sources and allow users to view and interact with multiple streams of data simultaneously.

New GrantCraft Guide Explores Grantmaking to Support Indigenous Peoples

A new guide released today by GrantCraft, a service of Foundation Center, explores how funders collaborate with and bring support to indigenous communities around the world. Funding Indigenous Peoples: Strategies for Support, developed in partnership with International Funders for Indigenous Peoples (IFIP) and launched at an event hosted by the Ford Foundation, illustrates how donors see indigenous populations as important partners, especially in the areas of environmental defense, climate change, and global food security, because they live on lands holding much of the earth's remaining biodiversity.

Philanthropy Leaders Call for Greater Role in Tackling Global Challenges Defined in New Sustainable Development Goals

Today, more than 150 leaders from philanthropy, government, UN agencies, civil society, and business are meeting to consider how the philanthropy community can connect more with the Sustainable Development Goals over the next 15 years. "Philanthropy Engaged: Implementing and Achieving the Post-2015 Agenda" is being hosted by the SDG Philanthropy Platform, a partnership of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Foundation Center, and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA). New Report Analyzes $1.8 Billion in Global Human Rights Funding

Released today, the 2015 edition of Advancing Human Rights: Update on Global Foundation Grantmaking analyzes $1.8 billion granted by 774 foundations in support of nearly 11,000 organizations worldwide. The third in an annual series produced jointly by Foundation Center and the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG), this report is part of an ongoing effort to advance knowledge and facilitate strategic decision making in the field of human rights philanthropy.

Philanthropy's Role in Financing Development Highlighted in Addis Ababa Conference

At the UN's Third International Conference on Financing for Development, world leaders are looking at ways in which all sources of finance can support sustainable development. The purpose of the conference is to develop a financing framework for the world's new sustainable development agenda, the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), and ensure that resources support economic development and improve social outcomes in areas like health, education, and employment opportunities, while protecting the environment.

Funding for Black Male Achievement Is Growing

A new report jointly released by Foundation Center and the Campaign for Black Male Achievement shows a distinct trend toward increased U.S. foundation funding for organizations and programs that are working to improve the life outcomes of Black males. Education historically receives the largest share of this support, but giving in other areas, including human services and public affairs, has grown. In addition to analyzing U.S. funding trends, Quantifying Hope: Philanthropic Support for Black Men and Boys describes recent initiatives in the field of Black male achievement.

Tomorrow, representatives from government and civil society will convene at an event in Bogota organized by the Post-2015 Partnership Platform for Philanthropy, a project launched last November by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Foundation Center, and a committee of leading foundations guided by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA). The event is the second in a planned series of workshops to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and data and identify opportunities around how philanthropy can engage in the evolving global development landscape.
